Anaconda Manhunt Ends with Arrest of Shooting Suspect

After a week-long manhunt involving over 250 law enforcement personnel from 39 local, state, and federal agencies, Michael Paul Brown, the suspect in the fatal shooting at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana, was apprehended last Friday.

The multi-agency operation, which included the Granite County Sheriff's Office, Montana Highway Patrol, FBI, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, local police departments, and the U.S. Forest Service, expanded search areas from Stumptown Road to Barker Lakes amidst rugged, forested terrain.

The breakthrough came when law enforcement personnel, using air and ground assets, located and tracked a stolen white Ford F-150 truck, which was found stocked with clothing, food, and outdoor gear. The release of public photos and descriptions of Brown helped in identifying his movements. Gradually constricting search zones and deploying numerous officers to "flush him out" from known hiding locations eventually led to Brown's capture in an area that was previously searched but where he was not actively hiding anymore.

Brown, who had been on the run since the shooting, briefly returned home and another nearby structure after fleeing, where he ditched his clothes and personal items before stealing another vehicle. This complicating factor initially made tracking efforts more challenging, but the coordinated efforts and persistence of law enforcement personnel ultimately resulted in Brown's apprehension near the original search zone.

The victims of the shooting have been identified as 59-year-old Daniel Baillie, 64-year-old Nancy Kelley, 70-year-old David Leach, and 74-year-old Tony Palm. Cassandra Dutra, a bartender at the Owl Bar, expressed her feelings about the incident, stating it was "totally overwhelming."

Clare Boyle, Brown's niece, stated that Brown struggled with his mental health during his time in the Army and his mental health worsened with the passing of both of his parents. Boyle also expressed concern about the system failing to address Brown's mental health issues and the lack of action taken to report suspicious behavior.

Michael Paul Brown served as an armor crewman in the US Army from January 2001 to May 2005 and was deployed to Iraq from February 2004 to March 2005. He was armed when he was arrested around 2 p.m. local time, approximately five and a half miles away from the shooting scene.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Attorney Morgan Smith notified victims' families that Brown was taken into custody. Tips from the public were crucial in locating Brown, and the manhunt involved searching challenging terrain in the western Montana wilderness.

The shooting at The Owl Bar was the biggest in Montana in a decade, and the community is relieved that the suspect has been apprehended. The investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available.
