Suspect accused of hijacking, implicated in airport security incident at YVR
In a shocking turn of events, a 39-year-old former commercial pilot named Shaheer Cassim has been charged with hijacking a small airplane at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with alleged terrorism implications.
Cassim, born in 1986, had previously worked for KD Air, a small airline based on Vancouver Island, from 2008 to 2010. His former employers described him as one of the smartest and best pilots they worked with, highlighting his intelligence and ability to learn quickly.
The Prosecution Service of Canada has indicated that this hijacking charge has terrorism implications. The incident occurred at YVR on Tuesday afternoon when Cassim allegedly stole a small plane from the Victoria Flying Club and flew it over the Salish Sea before landing it at YVR.
