In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has closed its investigation into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, concluding that it was a case of suicide with no evidence of foul play.

The closure report, filed in March 2025, marks the end of the CBI probe after multiple parallel investigations by different agencies. The report finds no criminal conspiracy or involvement of people like Rhea Chakraborty or Rajput’s sisters. The special court, which is now reviewing the report, has issued notices asking for responses from parties including Rhea Chakraborty to the closure report.

The case remains pending in court as it awaits responses and judicial decisions on whether the investigation is truly closed or requires reopening. It's important to note that the CBI's findings are preliminary and subject to the court's final decision.

Sushant Singh Rajput, a popular actor known for his roles in films like "Kai Po Che!" and "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", was found dead in his Mumbai's Bandra apartment in 2020 at the age of 34. His father filed a complaint, leading to the Bihar Police registering an abetment of suicide case against Rhea Chakraborty. The Mumbai Police and postmortem reports confirmed Rajput's death as suicide.

During the course of the investigation, the CBI recorded statements of Rhea Chakraborty and others, and collected Rajput's medical records. Forensic specialists at AIIMS dismissed the claims of "poisoning and strangling" in their conclusive medico-legal opinion to the CBI regarding Rajput's death.

The inquiry faced significant political controversy, with the Maharashtra Congress criticizing the BJP for alleged political exploitation of the case, while defending the Maharashtra police and the MVA government against accusations of suppression. The CBI also closed the related Disha Salian case as a suicide with no link to Rajput's death.

As of August 2025, the official position by the CBI is that Rajput's death was a suicide, and the investigation stands closed pending court review. The court's decision will provide final clarity on the matter.
