Feds Sue Pro-Palestine Groups over Alleged Hamas Collusion

Hey buddy, take a load off and let's chat about some hot news. Two major US pro-Palestine groups, National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP) and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), are facing heat after a federal lawsuit accused them of spreading Hamas propaganda. This juicy lawsuit was filed by Greenberg Traurig, the 14th highest-grossing US law firm, and aims to prove that these organizations serve as "Hamas's propaganda division in the United States".

The lawsuit's plaintiffs include nine American and Israeli individuals, six of whom are survivors of an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and the siblings of victims killed in that attack, among others who were displaced from Israeli kibbutzim. This litigation was filed in the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.

According to the lawsuit, NSJP and AMP have provided "intentional, systematic, and substantial assistance to Hamas's acts of international terrorism," causing injury to the plaintiffs. The lawsuit does not specify the monetary damages sought from these organizations.

This lawsuit comes on the heels of a wave of student protests across US campuses against Israel's ongoing war in Gaza. Over 90 Gaza solidarity encampments have been set up at US universities in recent weeks, with nearly 2,000 arrests reported since mid-April. Protests were sparked when students at Columbia University in New York City set up a Gaza solidarity encampment, inspiring similar actions at schools nationwide.

NSJP chapters on US campuses have been at the forefront of organizing these protests. The conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Israel responded to these attacks by declaring war and launching a siege on Gaza, followed by a devastating aerial bombing campaign and a ground invasion.

Over 34,500 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have lost their lives in Israel's war on Gaza, with entire residential neighborhoods destroyed and civilian infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals, and mosques, targeted.

Dr Hatem Bazian, chairman of AMP, has labeled the lawsuit an "Islamophobic text reeking in anti-Palestinian racism." Bazian's response calls the allegations "baseless" and criticizes the lawsuit for "mocking basic legal research." At the time of this writing, Middle East Eye awaits a comment from Greenberg Traurig regarding the lawsuit.

This controversy around NSJP and AMP adds to the growing scrutiny of pro-Palestinian activism, with some advocacy groups and individuals facing federal actions. The environment has led to increased federal investigations and legal actions against groups or individuals perceived to be involved in or supportive of terrorist activities or propaganda.
