In the small town of Oer-Erkenschwick, the mayoral race is heating up, with incumbent Mayor Carsten Wewers (CDU) facing a strong challenge from SPD candidate, Shoaiub Nazir. The runoff election, scheduled for September 28, promises to be a significant event in the town's political landscape.

The race has seen an increase in voter turnout, a positive sign for the town's democratic process. Nazir, a newcomer to the political scene, secured 4,894 votes (38.42%) in his first mayoral candidacy, indicating a strong desire for change among the town's residents.

Nazir's campaign has been marked by a focus on addressing citizens' concerns and promoting transparency. His efforts have sparked discussions and exchanges of ideas among citizens, even those from the conservative camp, making people feel more informed. However, his campaign posters have been defaced with AfD stickers, which may be a violation of the Criminal Code.

Meanwhile, the AfD has seen an increase in votes, but their local mayoral candidate, Carsten Hempel, lost the election. Despite this, the AfD has recommended its voters to support Wewers in the runoff election.

Wewers, on the other hand, has been criticised for ignoring important democratic topics and excluding some citizens from information flows. This has led to a dull or nonexistent political debate in the town. Political debates in Oer-Erkenschwick are generally unfair and stirring comes from other camps.

Some comments on Facebook claim that Nazir will not keep his promises, but he has made no promises during his campaign. The potential for Oer-Erkenschwick to become more open is a question for the voters to decide at the ballot box on September 28.

It's worth noting that under German law (StGB §303 Abs. 1), one can be liable to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine for unlawfully damaging or destroying a foreign object.

The SPD currently holds the eight seats in the city council of Oer-Erkenschwick. Jupp Nazir, the SPD candidate, has shown a desire to change politics in Oer-Erkenschwick and is aiming to bring about a more open and transparent political environment. The runoff election on September 28 will be a crucial test for him and for the town's future.

Absentee voting is available for voters in Oer-Erkenschwick before the runoff election on September 28. The town's residents have the opportunity to make their voices heard and shape the future of Oer-Erkenschwick.
