Surprise Visit of Zelenskyy in Berlin Prior to Trump-Putin Discussions

In a significant move, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gathered in Berlin today for a series of high-level video conferences, marking a continuation of the discussions initiated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The aim was to coordinate their positions ahead of President Donald Trump's scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

The talks, which include leaders from France, Britain, Italy, Poland, Finland, and the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Council President António Costa, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, will cover several key points.

One of the main topics is the provision of security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to NATO’s collective-defense clause. This proposal, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is seen as crucial in deterring future Russian aggression.

Another focus is the support for a ceasefire in Ukraine. While European leaders expressed strong backing for this measure, President Trump appeared to question its necessity, marking a shift from his earlier stance.

The leaders also unanimously endorsed the idea of a trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Putin. However, Putin has historically resisted such direct talks.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has made it clear that he opposes any territorial concessions under pressure, equating Russia’s demand for Kyiv to cede control of parts of Donbass to an illogical demand comparable to the U.S. giving up Florida.

French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted that security guarantees for Ukraine are intrinsically tied to the security of the entire European continent, signaling a broader regional security concern aligned with Ukraine's status.

President Trump signaled a willingness to provide U.S. security guarantees to Ukraine, a long-standing Ukrainian and European priority, though he did not specify the nature of these guarantees.

The first video session will link Merz, Zelenskyy, and the aforementioned leaders, with the agenda being to agree on a united stance before Trump and his vice-president J.D. Vance join the second call at 15:00.

The goal of these talks is to secure a clear US commitment not to negotiate over Ukraine’s head. Concern exists among European officials that Trump could strike a deal with Putin involving Ukrainian territorial concessions.

Berlin police have warned of potential road closures, pedestrian restrictions, S-Bahn, and U-Bahn delays around the Reichstag and Chancellery due to the high-level meetings.

Britain's prime minister Keir Starmer has reiterated his call for binding protections for Ukraine, adding to the unity and resolve shown by the international community in supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This meeting is seen as a moment of renewed dialogue and unity among Ukraine, the U.S., and European allies, setting a coordinated stance to present at the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, aiming to break the yearslong impasse on the conflict and pave the way for a negotiated settlement.
