Surgeon Zac Taylor shares optimistic post-surgery news for Joe Burrow
The Cincinnati Bengals and their star quarterback, Joe Burrow, are focusing on his overall health going forward, as opposed to a short-term gain. This decision comes after Burrow left the game against the Jaguars due to a toe injury.
Burrow, who has been with the Bengals since 2020, having been drafted into the organization out of Ohio State, will undergo surgery for the injury on his left foot. The surgery is expected to keep him out for at least three months, with his earliest possible return projected sometime in December 2025. The Bengals have already placed him on the Injured Reserve List.
In his absence, Jake Browning has taken over as the starting quarterback. Browning, who is not expected to carry the franchise on his shoulders, showed promise in his first game as a starter, finishing with 241 passing yards and two touchdowns in a 31-27 victory.
Despite the setback, the Bengals are currently 2-0 to start the season, putting them in a strong position for playoff contention. However, if Burrow is to return by the end of the season, his play will be significantly limited, focusing on pocket passing as opposed to running.
This is not the first time Burrow has had to deal with serious injury. Previously, he sustained an ACL injury in 2020 and a wrist injury in 2023. In 2023, Burrow signed a five-year $275 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, cementing his status as a key player for the team.
Zac Taylor, head coach of the Bengals, confirmed that Burrow underwent a successful toe surgery. Since joining the Bengals, Burrow has thrown 19,190 passing yards, 142 touchdowns, and has a pass completion rate of 68.5%.
The best case scenario for Burrow to return would be if the Bengals are in a position to contend for the playoffs. With the team's current form, it remains to be seen whether Burrow will be able to make a comeback before the end of the year.
