Escalating incidents of hate crimes against Muslims, allegedly perpetrated by right-wing extremists. - Surge in Anti-Islamic Actions and Defenders' Privileges
The alarming surge in Islamophobic crimes across Bavaria has skyrocketed by more than triple in the past three years, with the perpetrators primarily hailing from the far-right faction. These troubling figures stem from the Ministry of Interior's response to a request made by the Greens in the state parliament.
Last year alone, Bavaria recorded a staggering total of 213 Islamophobic related criminal and violent offenses. This statistic drastically decreased in 2023 to 171, but still managed to outdo the number of reported incidents in 2022, which stood at 66. The record-breaking figure for 2024, unfortunately, tops them all.
The number of violent Islamophobic crimes has also reached an all-time high, with 15 offenses and a total of 26 victims.
Over 80% of Islamophobic crimes, including the vast majority of violent offenses, are perpetrated by far-right individuals. This year, six attacks against mosques or other Islamic institutions were registered - in 2023, there were ten.
Green MP Cemal Bozoglu expressed his concerns, stating, "These numbers paint a grim picture: Not only is Islamophobia on the rise in Bavaria, but it is predominantly the far-right who pose a threat to our Muslim fellow citizens." He continued, "This hateful disdain towards individuals due to their faith is deeply concerning and must be combated with the same vigor as any other form of hate crime affecting our society."
The importance of accurately documenting these crimes and offering support to victims cannot be overstated.
The Greens are advocating for a variety of changes, such as a statewide anti-discrimination office, dedicated contacts at public prosecutor's offices and police, and a central commissioner for the Bavarian judiciary for racist and anti-Muslim hate crimes.
To effectively monitor and report anti-Muslim criminal and violent offenses, a civil society research and monitoring office is needed in Bavaria - resembling what already exists for anti-Semitic incidents. In addition, widespread support and counseling centers for victims of racist and anti-Muslim crimes are indispensable.
