Surfin' Safely Returns to Munich's Eisbach Wave Post-Accident

- Surfers can now venture into the waters to ride the towering icebergs

Here's the scoop on surfin' back at the Eisbach wave in Munich after a tragic incident in April. The city is up and running again, but not without some changes to keep things safe for those who love to catch a wave.

Munich's Mayor, Dieter Reiter (SPD), has announced the return of surfing with a strict set of new regulations. Surfers should be experienced, physically fit, and ready to ride the waves between 5:30 AM and 10:00 PM—no night rides to avoid rescue operations in the dark. Swift reflexes, clear vision, and steady nerves are key now more than ever!

As for safety, surfers need to make sure they use specially designed self-opening leashes (leashes) for their boards. Why? You ask? This is to ensure surfers don't get trapped underwater in case of danger, as was the case with the April incident.

The announcement was faster than a speeding wave and came just a day after Munich's Deputy Mayor, Dominik Krause (Greens), hinted at a possible reopening "at the latest next week." The investigation by the Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office on the April incident has been closed.

On a gloomy April night around 11:30 PM, a tragedy struck the Eisbach wave in the English Garden. A 33-year-old woman, an experienced surfer according to the office, and her partner were enjoying a surf session when the partner heard cries for help and saw his girlfriend disappear beneath the surface. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and passed away about a week later.
