Revolutionized Wave Riding at Eisbach
Surfers can now take on the challenge of riding the iceberg waves
Munich (dpa) - The turbulent waters of Eisbach, Munich's famed surf spot, have roared back to life following a tragic incident. Munich's dauntless mayor, Dieter Reiter (SPD), announced the revitalization of the wave, complete with new safety measures designed to keep experienced, all-terrain surfers on their boards without sacrificing the thrill of the ride.
The city's courageous response grants permission for daring surfers to hit the waves, under strict supervision and within specific hours - between the break of dawn (5:30 AM) and the setting of the sun (10:00 PM) - allowing rescue teams to keep a vigilant eye on the action without engaging in perilous nighttime missions.
But that's not all. This vanguard of water sports has learned from the past and adorned its arsenal with new weapons to guarantee the safety of every surfer touching the legendary Eisbach. Namely, a self-releasing leash ("leash") that snaps free under perilous conditions, ensuring surfers don't fall prey to entangling hazards, as was the grim fate of a surfer struck by ill fortune in the dreadful incident.
Rapid Resurrection
The revival of the Eisbach wave on Friday surpassed expectations, arriving a day earlier than anticipated. Munich's second-in-command, Dominik Krause (Greens), shared his enthusiasm, as he confidently expected the wave to burst forth "at the latest next week." Impressively, the prosecutor's office had released its findings the previous day.
The harrowing episode unfolded on the night of April 16th, when the unthinkable occurred. Two seasoned surfers made their way to the English Garden's wave for an illuminated ride. As midnight neared, the woman heard her partner's chilling cries for help and witnessed her friend disappear beneath the waves, along with her board. In critical condition upon arrival at the hospital, she fought valiantly, but her life was ultimately claimed by the treacherous waters about a week later.
