Griffin Colapinto's Magical Dolphin Surfing Experience at J-Bay
Griffin Colapinto, the sixth-ranked male surfer in the world, had a remarkable encounter during the Corona Cero Open at Jeffreys Bay in July 2025. While practicing for the competition, a large pod of around 200 dolphins joined him on a wave, making it an unforgettable moment in his professional surfing career.
The video of Colapinto racing down the wave with the dolphins diving and gliding next to him resembles a scene from a Disney movie. Colapinto described the experience as "magical" and a good omen for him. He took advantage of the situation, riding the wave with the dolphins, and even performed a long floater during the ride, mimicking what he believes a dolphin would do.
This extraordinary event happened at Jeffreys Bay, one of the fastest and most technical waves on earth, during the 2025 World Surf League Championship Tour’s Corona Cero Open event. Colapinto’s heats and performances at the event have been highlighted in official World Surf League videos.
Despite the magical encounter with the dolphins, Colapinto’s performance at J-Bay was not mentioned in the context of his world ranking. He finished in 2nd place at the event, losing to Cole Houshmand in the final.
In a separate event, Colapinto represented Team USA in Tahiti at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but his experience with the dolphins was not mentioned in the context of his Olympic representation or World Surf League Championship placements.
The video of Colapinto’s ride with the dolphins was shared on Instagram by Red Bull Surfing, allowing fans to witness this unique and magical moment. Colapinto has finished twice in the top-three at the World Surf League Championship, showcasing his exceptional talent in the sport.
