Trump Criticizes Sitting Justices Over Tax Records and Immigration Policies

President Donald Trump has once again found himself at odds with the Supreme Court, this time over his tax records and immigration policies. In a series of recent comments, Trump has criticized several justices, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and lower court judges.

In a news conference in India, Trump expressed his displeasure with the justices' decisions, stating that he wants them to reject demands for his tax, bank, and financial records issued by House committees and the Manhattan district attorney. Trump's remarks were the most critical he has been of sitting justices since he took office.

The cases in question are scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court a month later, and involve subpoenas for Trump's tax, bank, and financial records. The justices' decision to grant a stay of the lower court orders in January, allowing the administration's new wealth test for immigrants to take effect everywhere except in Illinois, appears to have provoked Trump's ire.

Trump's criticism of Justice Sonia Sotomayor appears to be referencing a dissenting opinion she wrote on Friday, in which she expressed concerns about the administration's frequent requests for emergency stays. Sotomayor wrote the dissenting opinion in a dispute over the administration's new wealth test for immigrants.

In 2018, Trump also criticized an "Obama judge" who ruled against a Trump asylum policy, which provoked a rebuke from Chief Justice John Roberts. Roberts stated that there are no Obama judges or Trump judges, but an independent judiciary doing their best to do equal right. Trump defended his 2018 comment with a defiant tweet saying "Sorry Justice Roberts."

Trump's criticism of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stems from interviews she gave in 2016 that were critical of Trump. More recently, Trump criticized U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson before she sentenced his former advisor, Roger Stone, to prison.

Justices write dissenting opinions to change the minds of people with whom they disagree through persuasive reasoning. However, it is highly unlikely that Justices Ginsburg or Sotomayor would step aside from these cases, as they decide for themselves when to do so. On Friday, the court granted the administration's emergency request to enforce the rule in Illinois as well.

The legal disputes over the tax documents and financial records of President Donald Trump have been ongoing since March 2019, with the two judges discussed in connection with these cases being Judge Jennifer Choe-Groves and Judge Victor Marrero. The outcome of these cases could have significant implications for the president and the future of his administration.
