Newspiece:

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, acting as the case's relay, finalized the list of interrogatees after both the prosecution and defense lawyers presented their testimonies in the Supreme Federal Court.

Here are the individuals who will now face questioning: Jair Bolsonaro, former head honcho, Alexandre Ramagem (ex-director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency), Almir Garnier (former Navy Commander), Anderson Torres (ex-Justice Minister), Augusto Heleno (ex-Minister of Institutional Security), Paulo Sérgio Nogueira (ex-Defense Minister), and Walter Braga Netto (ex-Civil House Minister of Bolsonaro).

Only Braga Netto, currently detained in Rio de Janeiro, will be interviewed via video call. The rest will be grilled at the STF headquarters in Brasília.

The First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court unanimously approved the indictment against this cohort in late March. The accusers allege criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic state, coup d'état, qualified damage, and destruction of public property.

The intrigue started after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva triumphed in the October 2022 presidential election. Bolsonaro challenged his loss, and according to the accusations, a coup d'état was orchestrated to delay Lula da Silva's inauguration, resulting in the storming of the seats of the three powers on January 8, 2023.

From May 19 to the present, 52 witnesses have provided testimonies, proposed by both parties.

The most controversial testimonies came from two former military commanders who confirmed being summoned by Bolsonaro in December 2022 to brainstorm alternatives to hamper Lula da Silva's inauguration.

General Marco Antonio Freire Gomes, the former commander of the Army, attested that Bolsonaro reached out to the top brass about the potential implementation of a state of siege and "intervention" in the Electoral Justice. Freire Gomes stated his opposition and warned Bolsonaro to "weigh the consequences," as going down this path could ensnare him "legally."

The former Aeronautics chief, Carlos Batista Junior, corroborated Freire Gomes' account and asserted that Bolsonaro's proposals constituted "an assault on the democratic regime."

Both Freire Gomes and Batista Junior concurred on one point: Admiral Almir Garnier, one of the accused in this case, seemed to favor the coup plans more than his counterparts.

Sources close to the judiciary suggest that the trial is anticipated to wrap up by the end of the year. The verdicts will be handed down between October and November.
