Supreme Court Orders Removal of Stray Dogs from Streets Sparks Reactions from Celebrities like Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Raveena Tandon, Along with Others.
In a series of recent events, several celebrities and animal rights activists have voiced their concerns against the Supreme Court's order to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi. The order, they argue, goes against the principles of animal welfare and ethical treatment.
At a hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated, "We can't sacrifice our children merely because few individuals feel that they are animal lovers or something." However, the celebrities and activists argue that stray dogs are an integral part of the urban ecosystem and that humane alternatives exist.
Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar, known for her activism, shared Mahatma Gandhi's quote on her social media, stating, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." She also posted a picture of a stray dog and wrote, "We don't deserve them."
Actor Varun Dhawan re-shared a statement about the SC order on stray dog relocation on his Instagram Story. Actress Raveena Tandon also criticised the court's decision by posting in support of strays on her social media.
Animal Rights Activists were detained at India Gate while protesting against the SC order on stray dog relocation.
The arguments and alternatives proposed by these groups include the implementation of Animal Birth Control (ABC) with release, community dog care models, improved public awareness and education, and enhanced medical interventions. These approaches aim to humanely control the dog population without harming their freedom or the ecology.
The celebrities and activists' stance contrasts with the Court's public safety-first approach, which mandates removal and sheltering without re-release. The concern over the welfare conditions in shelters, the feasibility and ethics of permanently removing free-ranging dogs, and potential ecological impacts remain unaddressed in the order.
These events highlight a growing movement towards coexistence with stray dogs, using ethical population control methods, rather than a blanket removal approach.
