Trump's Trade War: Only AfD Fans Aren't Sweating It! 😈

Supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) express fewer concerns.

Germany's citizens are getting pessimistic about their nation's economic outlook, thanks to Donald Trump and his trade war. Half of them are wringing their hands, worried about their country's prosperity.

Is Trump's trade war a menace to Germany's economy? The answer's divided, with half of the folks fretting about prosperity, and the other half showing a blasé attitude.

When asked about their concerns towards Trump's announced tariffs, 49 percent of Germans voiced their worries. This intel comes from a Forsa poll for RTL/ntv trend barometer. A half-assized 50 percent couldn't care less.

Income Inequality and Trade Fears 🤑

Trump's policies are giving the lower-income folks the heebie-jeebies. Among those making less than 2,500 euros, the concerns are stronger. Conversely, the upper crust (making over 4,000 euros) is taking a chill pill: only 45 percent are concerned, with 55 percent showing apathy.

Supporters of SPD, Union, and Left Party are going grey with worry. AfD supporters, on the other hand, are nonplussed. Green supporters are keeping up with the average Joe on this issue.

Counter-Tariffs: Let the Games Begin! 🥊

More than half of Germans (52 percent) believe the EU should hit back with hard counter-tariffs against the U.S, stat! 42 percent prefer waiting it out. AfD supporters, predictably, are hollering against swift EU counter-tariffs.

Economic Expectations: Down We Go! 😶

The trade conflict seems to be dimming Germany's economic expectations. Only 21 percent think economic conditions will get better in the future; last week, it was 25 percent.

57 percent reckon things will take a nose dive. This is an increase of 4 percentage points. 20 percent believe the economic conditions will remain status quo. Since the federal election, economic expectations have been on a constant downhill ride.

Data collected by the mighty Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany. Data on the trade dispute was gathered on April 4 and 7. Sample size: 1,001 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: plus/minus 3 percentage points. Data on economic expectations was collected between April 1 and 7. Sample size: 2,501 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.

  • Background Info: Trump's trade policies could be perilous for Germany and the EU as a whole. Main concerns include:
    1. Tariff Effects: Trump's administration has slapped tariffs on imports from many countries, including a base tariff of 10% and higher rates for countries with sizeable trade deficits with the U.S.[3]. These tariffs could hike costs for U.S. consumers and undermine the competitiveness of EU exports, primarily harming sectors like automotive, crucial to Germany’s economy[1][2].
    2. Trade Uncertainty: The continuous threat of more tariffs and trade policy uncertainty can discourage investment, inflate risk premiums, and slow economic growth. This uncertainty, as measured by indices like the Trade Policy Uncertainty Index (TPU), has shown significant surges during periods of heightened U.S. trade quarrels[2].
    3. EU Economic Fallout: Experts suggest a 10% tariff could curb EU economic growth by around 1% over two years, hitting Germany and Italy hard[1]. The EU's response, including potential retaliatory tariffs or negotiations, could further affect the economic impact on Germany[4].
    4. Trade Diversification: Strategies such as strengthening preferential trade agreements with other regions might help offset some of these impacts by reducing the EU's dependence on U.S. trade[1].

In short, while the immediate impact on Germany might vary depending on tariff specifics and retaliations, the present trade scenario threatens economic security and growth, especially in export-oriented sectors like automotive.

  1. The employment policy within the community is a topic of concern for many Germans due to the ongoing trade war, as indicated by the Forsa poll for RTL/ntv trend barometer, which shows that 49 percent of respondents are worried about the potential effects of Trump's announced tariffs.
  2. The opinions towards Trump's tariffs are divided among the German populace, with half expressing concern and the other half displaying a nonchalant attitude.
  3. Interestingly, supporters of the extremist party AfD are the least concerned about Trump's tariffs, maintaining a pessimistically blasé attitude towards the issue.
