Supporters in Nebraska Gather Public Support for Legalizing Mobile Sports Wagering Through a Voters' Survey
In the United States, sports betting has seen a significant expansion since 2018, with 38 states, including Washington D.C., offering some form of legal wagering. Nebraska, however, remains one of the few states that only provide retail sports betting options.
Recently, a coalition supporting the legalization of online sports wagering in Nebraska has taken steps to gauge public opinion on the matter. The coalition, which includes Ho-Chunk Inc., Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska's economic development arm, FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, and BetMGM, has launched a public opinion poll on the topic of mobile sports wagering in Nebraska. The results of this poll are expected by the end of the week.
Lance Morgan, Ho-Chunk's CEO, stated that the coalition has "big plans" that require public support for their implementation. Morgan also mentioned a growing number of requests from bettors for online sports wagering at WarHorse's retail betting outlet.
If public opinion supports the expansion of gambling with the addition of mobile betting, lawmakers may take the initiative and add the matter to the upcoming ballot. A bill proposing the legalization of online sports betting has already been introduced in Nebraska.
Supporters trying to legalize mobile betting through a petition drive would need to collect approximately 122,000 signatures from residents in the state. The support group in Nebraska needs 83,366 signatures to get the legalization of mobile sports betting on the November 2024 ballot. The deadline for the collection of valid signatures for the petition drive is July 2024.
It's worth noting that Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming, states that border Nebraska, offer mobile sports betting. Many people prefer using their smartphones to place a wager instead of driving miles to visit a retail sportsbook or going across the border to a nearby state.
Nebraska's neighbouring states, Missouri and South Dakota, also have different approaches to sports betting. Missouri is anticipating the legalization of wagering, while South Dakota offers only retail sports betting.
The coalition's efforts in Nebraska aim to evaluate the likelihood of the state's residents supporting the addition of mobile betting. If successful, Nebraska could join the growing list of states offering mobile sports betting, providing a more convenient option for sports enthusiasts.
Efforts toward the legalization of mobile betting in Nebraska continue, with the coalition's poll results expected to provide valuable insights into public opinion on the matter. As the deadline for the petition drive approaches, supporters will be working diligently to gather the necessary signatures to bring the issue to a vote in November 2024.
