In a surprising turn of events, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's stance on India's position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has received praise from the BJP, causing a stir within the opposition party.

Tharoor, speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, admitted he was wrong in opposing India's stand on the Ukraine war. He sharply criticized the additional 25% tariffs imposed by the US (raising total tariffs on India to 50%) for buying Russian oil, calling this a double standard, especially since the US imports significant amounts of Russian goods such as fertilizers and palladium.

Tharoor's comments highlight India's sovereign right to make independent foreign policy choices and challenge US pressure, aligning with the BJP's narrative of projecting India as a strong, independent global player.

Within the Congress party, Tharoor’s posture on this issue has caused some tension because it contrasts with more cautious or differing positions in the party. His strong public statements against US tariffs and his criticisms of US President Donald Trump’s policies can be seen as challenging the Congress leadership's diplomatic balancing act.

The BJP’s praise of Tharoor serves to highlight divisions within Congress, putting pressure on the opposition by amplifying inconsistencies and dissent regarding India’s international stance. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya predicted that Tharoor's remarks would likely cause discomfort within the Congress party.

Meanwhile, the ongoing anti-terror operation in Akhal Forest in J&K has entered its seventh day. No response or comment was given by the Congress party regarding Tharoor's stance on India's position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In a positive note, Navratna NALCO's Q1 FY26 net profit surged 77 percent to Rs 1,064 crore.
