Germany's new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is making a favorable impression during his inaugural visit to Washington, as revealed by the latest RTL/ntv-Trendbarometer. Currently, the Union, led by Merz, is steadily gaining traction, while the SPD slightly dips and ties with the Left and Greens.

Just a month into his tenure, Chancellor Merz's approval ratings are on the rise, with both satisfaction in his leadership and his handling of US President Donald Trump increasing. Last week, he visited Trump at the White House, a meeting that sparked positive responses.

The RTL/ntv-Trendbarometer surveyed approximately 500 participants over two days to gauge the public's opinions on the question, "Is Merz representing the interests of Germany well towards Donald Trump?" Prior to the White House reception, 37% answered positively, rising to 56% afterward.

If an election were held today, the CDU and CSU would receive 27-28% of the votes, while the AfD rises to 20-23%. The SPD follows with approximately 15-16%, and the Greens and Left places are neck and neck at around 11-14%. The FDP is moving closer to the 5% hurdle with 3-4% support, while the BSW and other parties remain stagnant at around 6%. The proportion of undecided voters remains high at 21%.

While 49% of respondents consider the war in Ukraine to be the most important political issue, followed by the economic situation and US politics/Trump/trade, it's crucial to note that these findings represent a snapshot of the current political landscape and may change over time.

Political Insight: The CDU/CSU continues to maintain a strong position, while the AfD's support base doubled during the 2025 federal election, securing 2nd place. The SPD and Greens have had their fair share of challenges, while the FDP and BSW have struggled to gain traction.
