Trump's Plummeting Approval Ratings

Support for President Donald Trump in the United States has plummeted to an all-time low of 42%.

Here's the lowdown on Donald Trump's sliding approval ratings since becoming prez in 2025. Records show a steady downhill trend ever since his inauguration. As of April 21, a whopping 53% of the nation's folk weren't feeling his presidency.

Analysts trace the reason for this slide to two key moves by the president: the suspension of grants to numerous U.S. universities, and the appointment of a bigwig for DC's Kennedy Center. It turns out a solid 57% of the folks questioned thought Trump didn't have the power to thumb down university funding, while 66% believed he shouldn't be in charge of national museums and theaters. Nearly 6 out of 10 (59%) of the interviewees pointed a finger at Trump's policies for weakening the country's global influence.

Despite this downward spiral, Trump's approval rating still held water above the levels seen throughout most of Joe Biden's presidency. When ol' Joe took office in 2021, his rating clocked in at 55%, but by December 2025 it had nose-dived to 38%.

Trump signed a bunch of executive orders after taking office, including measures about deporting undocumented immigrants, shutting down feds, slashing healthcare funding, and cancelling programs promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) principles. In early April, he imposed harsh trade tariffs on all countries - a base rate of 10%, plus extra "reciprocal" tariffs. Automobile imports and their components were hit with a 25% levy too.

Additional Insights:

  • Trade Tariff Backlash: The April 2025 imposition of sweeping tariffs on trading partners sparked market fluctuations and public disapproval, with nearly 60% disapproving of these measures[1]. Despite the administration's attempts to boost the economy[1][2], the survey period showed no significant improvement in economic perceptions[1][2].
  • Overall Policy Dissent: Beyond opposition to the tariffs, widespread discontent centered around other policy decisions, such as opposition to federal department/agency reductions (55%)[1] and criticisms of excessive executive order usage (51%)[1]. Additionally, more Americans believed Trump's policies weakened the U.S. economy than strengthened it (49% vs. 37%)[2]), and concerns were raised about the U.S.'s international position under Trump's policies (49%)[2]. These factors eroded confidence, especially among less committed supporters and non-voters in 2024[2]. Historical trends also pointed towards further approval decline nearing midterms[3].
