Support for Indian nationals undergoing racist attacks in Ireland voiced by Kevin O'Brien

In recent months, there has been a concerning increase in racially motivated attacks against Indians in Ireland. These attacks, which have included violent incidents such as the stoning of a 9-year-old boy of Indian origin in Cork County and a brutal attack on a six-year-old girl, have left the Indian community in fear.

In response to these incidents, the Indian Embassy in Dublin issued a safety advisory, urging Indians to avoid deserted places and exercise heightened caution. The Embassy's statement read that racism and xenophobia have no place in Irish society.

Former Irish cricketer Kevin O'Brien expressed his disapproval of these attacks, stating that they do not reflect the spirit of the Irish people and will not be tolerated. O'Brien, who is famous for his exploits in the 2011 Cricket World Cup in India, where he smashed a fifty-ball century, the fastest in World Cup history at the time, to propel Ireland to an improbable upset win over England in Bengaluru, stated that India and its people hold a special place in his heart. He amplified his message by stating that the Indian community in Ireland is deeply valued and their contribution to Irish society is immense.

The Irish Embassy in New Delhi also condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms. The Embassy emphasized that the bond between Ireland and India remains unshaken. The Embassy's message was amplified by the Irish Embassy in India.

The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O'Callaghan, has also condemned these attacks, stating that they are "totally unacceptable" and contrary to Irish values. He has emphasized that increased sentencing parameters are now in place for hate crimes under the Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024. The Garda (Ireland Police) has identified perpetrators and is actively investigating these incidents. Senior Investigating Officers are assigned to ensure thorough investigations.

Notable figures like O'Brien have joined the call for action, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and the contribution of Indians to Ireland's society. The government and community leaders are engaging with youth groups and communities to address the issue, given that many attacks have been by young people.

Overall, the increased attacks have sparked widespread concern and a call for action to protect the Indian community in Ireland. Six racially-motivated attacks against Indians have been reported in Ireland in July and August of 2021. The Irish public and community are hopeful that these incidents will lead to a more inclusive and tolerant society for all.
