In a surprising turn of events, Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 2, 2025, in Studio City, California, after overstaying a B2 tourist visa that expired in February 2024. ICE is currently processing him for expedited removal from the United States.

The detention comes amidst serious allegations against Chavez Jr., who has an active arrest warrant in Mexico related to his involvement in organized crime, specifically for trafficking and manufacturing firearms, ammunition, and explosives. U.S. authorities also believe he is an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization since the Trump administration.

Chavez Jr.'s legal troubles extend beyond immigration issues. He has a criminal record that includes a 2012 conviction for driving under the influence and a recent conviction in Los Angeles for illegal possession and manufacture of assault weapons. Despite being flagged as an egregious public safety threat, internal DHS records under the Biden administration indicated Chavez was not a priority for immigration enforcement until his recent arrest.

Meanwhile, Chavez Jr.'s family, including fellow boxer Marco Verde, stands by his innocence. Verde, who was born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa like Chavez Jr., has expressed support for his fellow boxer, acknowledging the delicate nature of the situation.

As for Verde, his professional boxing career is just beginning. Having only had one fight at the professional level, he plans to gradually progress, starting with less challenging fights before moving to eight-round fights. Verde credits his family for giving him good values and taking care of him, a factor that has likely played a vital role in preventing him from taking wrong paths.

Verde will be returning to Mazatlán, Sinaloa on July 12 for a professional boxing match against Humberto Díaz. His goal is to understand each fight, enjoy it, and learn from it, whether he wins by decision or knockout.

This arrest comes shortly after Chavez's high-profile boxing match against Jake Paul in Anaheim, California, highlighting the intersection of his sports career and ongoing legal troubles linked to serious criminal accusations and cartel affiliations. The U.S. authorities are seeking to deport Chavez Jr. amid concerns about public safety and organized crime involvement.
