Superman's upcoming project by James Gunn showcases Krypto in fresh footage
In the heart of CinemaCon 2023, Director James Gunn and DC Studios unveiled an extended look at this summer's highly anticipated Superman film. The upcoming movie promises to deliver a thrilling narrative that centers on Superman's intervention in an international conflict.
The plot unfolds in the fictional nation of Boravia, where Superman steps in to prevent Boravia from invading its neighbour, Jarhanpur. However, his actions lead to backlash and ethical criticism, as the Man of Steel faces accusations of unilateral decision-making.
In the ensuing conflict, Superman is defeated by a Boravian metahuman known as the "Hammer of Boravia," who is later revealed to be Lex Luthor's metahuman creation, Ultraman. Superman retreats to his Fortress of Solitude, seeking refuge and recovery, aided by his superpowered dog, Krypto.
The Fortress of Solitude, Superman's home, is strategically positioned to face the sun, forming a magnifying glass to aid in Superman's healing process. During this time, Superman receives a message from his Kryptonian birth parents, though part of the message is initially damaged.
As Superman grapples with his injuries and the ethical implications of his actions, Lex Luthor orchestrates a major attack on Metropolis. In a surprising twist, Luthor unleashes a kaiju monster as a distraction, forcing Superman to team up with the Justice Gang - Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl - to battle the creature.
Meanwhile, Luthor's team infiltrates the Fortress, recovering the full Kryptonian message. The message, shockingly, reveals that Superman's parents urged him to conquer Earth and restore the Kryptonian race through multiple wives, adding a new layer of complexity to Superman's journey.
The movie, a hopeful and optimistic reinvention, aims to launch a fresh DC cinematic universe. Director James Gunn emphasizes themes of kindness and human love, steering away from the darker tones of previous DC films.
The extended footage revealed a significant role for Superman's dog, Krypto. The footage shows Krypto playing a prominent role, suggesting that he could be a key character in the summer's Superman film. In one scene, Krypto even bites and moves Superman's leg, adding a playful touch to the trailer.
As Superman smiles at a new robot, number 12, in the footage, it's clear that the robot could also play a significant role in the film. The trailer ends with Superman leaving the Fortress, where Krypto repeatedly snaps at him, hinting at the challenges that may lie ahead for the Man of Steel.
