Alpine Skiing: Weidle's Unlucky Start in Super-G

Kira Weidle, the skier from Starnberg, had a rough beginning to the Alpine World Cup season. She finished a disappointing 26th in the Super-G event held in St. Moritz.

The title went to Italy's Sofia Goggia, who excelled in her run, securing a lead of almost a second ahead of runner-up Cornelia Hütter from Austria. Behind her, Swiss Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami rounded off the podium.

"It was a botched run from start to finish," Weidle shared with ARD, admitting her performance was "very, very disappointing." Speaking about her choice to race first, Weidle thought that perhaps it may have been beneficial to observe a few other racers first. She struggled with some transitions and pointed towards her own mistakes as the primary reason for her underperformance.

Her teammate Emma Aicher was eliminated, while Katrin Hirtl-Stanggaßinger finished 36th.

Recovering from the setback

On the following Saturday at 10:30 a.m., ARD and Eurosport will broadcast a downhill race in Switzerland. Weidle is determined to redeem herself and replicate her third-place win from the previous year's first downhill race in St. Moritz.

The winter's speed competitions in St. Moritz were the first to take place. Regrettably, the Matterhorn races were unable to proceed due to inclement weather, and the men's World Cup in Beaver Creek, USA, was also called off.

Interesting Fact:

Kira Weidle did not compete in the 2022 Super-G Alpine World Cup event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Instead, she participated in the Downhill event at the 2025 World Championships in Saalbach, Austria, where she finished a commendable second, trailing behind Breezy Johnson by 1.64 seconds. Johnson set a rapid speed record of 138.5 kilometers per hour (86.5 miles per hour) and clinched the first place with a time of 1:41.29 minutes [2].

Kira Weidle shared her feelings about her disappointing placement in the Super-G event with ARD, explaining that her choice to race first and some mismanaged transitions led to her underperformance. Enthusiastic about the upcoming downhill race, Weidle is hopeful about regaining her form and improving her position in the World Cup standings. As a top-tier female skier representing Germany in international alpine skiing events, including the World Cup and the Winter Olympics, Kira Weidle continues to strive for improvement and success.
