Super Bowl 50: Detailed Overview of the Special Teams for Panthers and Broncos

Denver's Brandon McManus has been one of the busiest kickers in the NFL during the playoffs, making a reliable impact for the Broncos. His distance kicking skills are impressive, with 15 out of 20 kicks from 40 yards away successful, and 7 out of 50 or longer finding their mark. McManus has also managed to avoid any kicks being blocked during the playoffs.

On the other side, Carolina's Graham Gano tends to avoid kicks beyond 50 yards, attempting only four during the regular season. However, he did make two out of those four, showcasing his ability when given the opportunity. Unfortunately, Gano had four kicks blocked during the regular season, the most in the league.

Denver's Jordan Norwood has handled punt return duties for the Broncos during the playoffs, with just nine combined returns and an average of 8.0 yards per return. Meanwhile, Ted Ginn Jr. of the Panthers ranked fifth in the league in average yards per punt return with 10.3. Despite this, Ginn has not returned a punt for a touchdown this season.

The field goal unit often makes a significant impact in NFL games, and Super Bowl 50 will be no exception. In this Super Bowl, the player with the best record for field goals and extra points was Blair Walsh of the Minnesota Vikings. However, the specific best field goal success in that Super Bowl was by Phil Dawson of the Denver Broncos, who converted all his attempts, contributing to the Broncos' victory.

Both Britton Colquitt for the Broncos and Brad Nortman for the Panthers are serviceable punters, but unspectacular. When kicks are returned, Denver utilizes Andre Caldwell, while Carolina relies on Fozzy Whittaker and Joe Webb.

As the teams prepare for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, it's clear that both teams have relied on their special teams units to contribute to their success this season. However, neither team has a notorious threat to break off a game-changing return, and both will need to be mindful of special teams miscues, especially blocks, to secure a victory.
