Sun's return heralds – time to head for the aquatic scene

The upcoming week in Berlin and Brandenburg is set to bring a mix of warm and rainy days, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). Residents should prepare for showers and moderate temperatures rather than heatwaves, as temperatures are expected to hover around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Last month, the region experienced unusually rainy weather, with 145 liters per square meter falling in Berlin and 135 liters per square meter in Brandenburg. This rainy weather led to significantly fewer visitors at the free baths in the region compared to usual. Since the start of the season in April, the summer baths in Berlin have seen about 110,000 fewer visitors than in the same period last year.

However, the forecast for the weekend is more promising, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 32 degrees on Saturday, accompanied by plenty of sunshine. This has prompted Berlin's water police to prepare for an increase in boats, rafts, and paddleboards on the waters.

On Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain pleasant, with highs between 24 and 27 degrees. The Columbiadbad in Neukölln and the Sommerbad Staaken-West showed medium utilization on Friday afternoon, indicating a potential increase in visitors as the weekend progresses.

Berlin's gastronomy is also hoping for more stable summer weather due to weather-related restrictions affecting many businesses. Meanwhile, the indoor pools in Brandenburg have enjoyed unexpected summer success due to the gloomy weather, with more people visiting on rainy days. The largest indoor pool, Tropical Islands, reported good and especially short-term demand.

Despite the unpredictable weather, Berlin's bathing operations are preparing for increased visitors due to the forecasted good weather. However, a spokesperson for the bathing operations noted that Berliners may be hesitant to fully trust the weather forecast, given the recent unpredictable weather patterns.

On Monday afternoon, a warning for heavy and persistent rainfall has been issued, with rainfall up to 40 liters per square meter expected, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms. This could lead to flooded streets and cellars, and residents are advised to take caution, especially in road traffic due to flooding and aquaplaning risks. The rain is likely to persist into the evening, with the heaviest precipitation between 5 PM and 8 PM on that day.

As the week progresses, temperatures are expected to fluctuate, with Monday predicted to be sunny and dry with temperatures up to 29 degrees. Residents are advised to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and prepare for a mix of warm and rainy days.

"Residents may have learned to be skeptical about weather forecasts due to the recent unpredictable patterns, yet Berlin's bathing operations anticipate an increase in visitors, given the promises of good weather. Contrastingly, the indoor pools in Brandenburg have enjoyed success during the gloomy weather."

"While Berliners should prepare for a mix of warm and rainy days in the upcoming week, as per the German Weather Service (DWD), indoor pools like Tropical Islands continue to experience good demand due to the weather-related restrictions faced by many businesses."
