Heavy Rain and No Heat Wave Forecast for Oberschwaben Over the Weekend

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms in Oberschwaben and other southern regions of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria this weekend. The forecast suggests that the region may experience significant rainfall, with the potential for localised flooding and high water.

According to the DWD, the weather pattern involves a disturbance causing continuous torrential rain over certain southern regions, while northern parts of Germany are expected to have friendlier weather with some sunny periods. The rain and thunderstorms could be intense, with up to 150 liters per square meter possible and risks of hail and strong gusts of wind.

Despite the rain, temperatures are not forecast to show a significant increase. The temperature trend is described as temporarily midsummer-like but not markedly rising. High temperatures of up to 33°C are forecast for tomorrow (Friday) along the Rhine. The weekend will see summer temperatures soar, with highs of around 29°C in the mountains and up to 34°C along the Rhine.

The Baden-Württemberg State Farmers' Association (BLHV) has expressed concerns, as a large portion of the harvest in higher altitudes has not yet been brought in. The persistent rain since mid-July has put the harvest at a standstill. However, the sunny weather and high temperatures expected in the coming days are good news for farmers who have been waiting for sunshine after weeks of rain.

Thunderstorms are also possible next week. The strong high-pressure system over eastern Europe is causing the summer revival in southwestern Germany. This weather is good news for farmers, as several days of sunny, dry weather are needed to bring in the crop.

Despite the rainy forecast for Oberschwaben, the weather in Baden-Württemberg is currently sunny. Scattered rain is expected over the weekend. The next few days will be crucial for this year's harvest.

The Commission may find it necessary to consult on the draft directive given the potential impact of severe weather events, such as the heavy rain and thunderstorms forecasted for Oberschwaben, on workers who may be exposed to ionizing radiation during cleanup operations.

Given the continuously midsummer-like temperatures forecasted for the region, it is important for safety measures to be in place to protect workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, especially during cleanup after severe weather events.
