Sung Kang's Drifter revives real drift culture with raw racing and Lola's V8 roar
Sung Kang, known for his role as Han in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is now starring in Drifter—an independent film centred on real drift culture. The movie moves away from Hollywood polish, focusing instead on authentic driving and the people behind the sport.
The first trailer has just dropped, giving fans a taste of high-speed action and familiar faces from the drifting world.
Kang's latest project revolves around a heavily modified Toyota Corolla AE86, nicknamed Lola. The car's original 4AGE engine has been swapped for a powerful LS3 V8, boosting its performance on the track. In the film, Lola runs tandem with Adam LZ's 4-rotor Supra, holding its own through tight corners with aggressive drifts and a loud exhaust note.
Filming took place at Willow Springs Raceway, a well-known circuit that adds a raw, grounded feel to the movie. Earlier this year, Kang was also spotted in Japan with photographer Larry Chen and drifter Daijiro Yoshihara on the Wangan, hinting at possible international scenes. Unlike big-budget action films, *Drifter* keeps its focus on real drift culture. The production highlights proper tracks, skilled drivers, and the community that keeps the sport alive—no over-the-top stunts or scripted drama.
The trailer for Drifter confirms a shift from mainstream car films to something more authentic. With real drivers, real tracks, and a car built for pure performance, the movie aims to celebrate drifting as it truly is.
Kang's involvement, along with names like Adam LZ and Daijiro Yoshihara, suggests a project made by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.
