Sunderland Bolster Defence with Arthur Masuaku's Return to the Premier League

Sunderland have strengthened their squad for their return to the Premier League with the signing of free agent Arthur Masuaku. The DR Congo international, who spent seven years at West Ham United, returns to England's top-flight after a brief spell with Turkish side Besiktas.

Masuaku, who made 128 appearances for West Ham, scoring 2 goals and providing 10 assists, is known for his strong possession skills, defensive impact, and delivery in the final third. His experience in the Premier League will be invaluable for Sunderland, who are preparing for their first Premier League campaign since the 2016-17 season.

Sunderland have been active in the transfer market this summer, making a total of 11 signings. Alongside Masuaku, the club has brought in Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, Enzo Le Fee, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, Reinildo, and Marc Guiu. Xhaka, a former West Ham player, will also be joining the ranks at the Stadium of Light.

Masuaku's first Premier League match for Sunderland will be against his former club, West Ham United, in the opening game of the season. The left-back expressed his excitement about joining Sunderland and returning to the Premier League, stating that he aims to bring a winning mentality and joy to the club's fans.

Masuaku will face competition for the left-back spot from Dennis Cirkin, who was favoured by manager Regis Le Bris during Sunderland's promotion-winning campaign in 2024-25. However, the addition of Masuaku provides Sunderland with a formidable option in defence, offering both defensive solidity and attacking threat.

With Masuaku and Xhaka providing important top-flight experience, Sunderland fans can look forward to a promising season as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League.

Masuaku's addition to Sunderland's squad bolsters their defense, especially in European-leagues and the Premier League, given his prior experience with West Ham United in the Premier League. As Sunderland face their former player, West Ham United, in their opening game, Masuaku's competitive spirit is expected to contribute to the team's performances in these European leagues.
