In the Gardelegen district of Jävenitz, Altmark, a cyclist was struck by a car on Saturday morning, resulting in serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car is currently under investigation for reckless bodily harm.

The incident occurred as the driver failed to see the cyclist while turning left onto the bike lane. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of traffic safety and adherence to the rules of the road.

Under normal circumstances, cyclists are allowed to use the road but must do so safely, riding as far right as practicable without impeding normal traffic flow. However, cycling against the direction of traffic, as was the case here, is generally illegal and unsafe. This is because it increases the risk of collisions, as drivers are not expecting cyclists from that direction, reducing reaction time.

The cyclist in this incident was reportedly wearing a helmet, a crucial safety measure for cyclists. Helmets are essential in protecting the head in the event of a collision, and their use is often mandated by law.

The low-lying sun at the time of the incident may have played a role in the driver's inability to see the cyclist. While the search results do not directly address this, it is well known that low-angle sunlight can cause glare that impairs drivers’ vision, leading to an increased risk of accidents. This hazard is particularly relevant during sunrise and sunset, when the sun is low on the horizon and can temporarily blind drivers or obscure cyclists and pedestrians.

Cyclists should use reflective gear and lights to improve their visibility under such conditions. Motorized bicycles have additional restrictions such as helmet requirements, restrictions on highways, and speed limits. It is crucial for all road users to be aware of these regulations and to prioritise safety to prevent such incidents from occurring.

The police in Salzwedel reported the incident, and the investigation into the driver's actions is ongoing. We hope for the speedy recovery of the cyclist involved in this unfortunate accident.

  1. In light of this accident, it is essential for the community to revisit their policy on traffic safety, particularly focusing on the importance of adherence to the rules of the road, especially during low-angle sunlight and for those using vocational training programs to enhance driving skills.
  2. To prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, such as car-accidents involving cyclists, it's crucial for drivers to undergo vocational training that emphasizes the significance of pedestrian and cyclist safety, especially when visibility is low or when roads are shared with motorized bicycles.
