"Sun and Concrete" Claims Günter Rohrbach Film Prize 2023
The engaging film adaptation titled "Sun and Concrete" became the latest winner of the prestigious Günter Rohrbach Film Prize, earning a monetary reward of €10,000. The film, centered upon themes of friendship, the strong desire for improved circumstances, and the harsh effects of an uncertain future, was highly commended by the jury during the award ceremony held in Neunkirchen on Friday evening.
"Sun and Concrete" narrates an amusing account of teenage life in Berlin-Neukölln, drawing inspiration from Felix Lobrecht's novel of the same name. Fabian Gasmia and Christoph Müller shared the honor with director David Wnendt for their contributions to the film.
Critics lauded Wnendt's ability to touch upon socially significant topics, as well as his vivid portrayal of Berlin-Neukölln as a central hub of social inequality. The film highlights the relentless violence embedded within the massive housing estate without resorting to gratuitous display. The end result is an absorbing social panorama, with the camera, editing, and music working harmoniously.
In recognition of their exceptional performances, actress Laura Tonke and actor Matthias Brandt received awards of €3,000 each for their contributions to "Wann wird es endlich wieder so, wie es nie war" and "Roter Himmel", respectively. Levy Rico Arcos, whose acting skills were showcased in "Sonne und Beton", took home the Saarländischer Rundfunk prize, valued at €5,000.
The Günter Rohrbach Film Prize Foundation collaborated with the city of Neunkirchen to celebrate the award's 13th year. Established in honor of film producer Günter Rohrbach ("Das Boot"), inspired by his hometown Neunkirchen (born October 23, 1928), the competition is geared towards German-language feature films. These films, adhering to minimum length requirements of 80 minutes each, must display an emphasis on "The world of work and society". Out of 64 submissions, the jury, led by actor and director Michael "Bully" Herbig ("Der Schuh des Manitu"), made their decision.
"Sun and Concrete" may well go on to earn further accolades at film festivals due to its socially meaningful themes and its cinematic excellence.
