The summer holidays in Bavaria, Germany, are experiencing a period of unsettled weather, with frequent heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly in southern regions. This weather pattern is due to a stationary disturbance causing continuous torrential rain across southern Germany.

However, Dirk Mewes, a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD), cautions that it would be a relief if temperatures manage to exceed 25 degrees. Despite the current cool temperatures, Mewes advises taking the sun as it comes and making the best of it.

The prevailing weather pattern is influenced by a "summer monsoon" effect caused by high pressure over the Mediterranean and Scandinavia, and a low-pressure disturbance over Germany. This tends to keep rain concentrated and mostly stationary over southern areas. As a result, drier and warmer conditions may be intermittent and localized rather than constant.

Bavaria, with its temperate continental-influenced climate, normally experiences warmer summers than northern Germany, though summer precipitation and humidity can be significant. Typical July and early August temperatures in places like Nuremberg and Bamberg average in the low to mid 20s Celsius, with variable rainfall patterns.

Despite the current cool temperatures, Mewes predicts that temperatures could reach up to 27 degrees in the coming week. However, heavy rain and strong storms remain a risk, particularly until Tuesday, August 5, 2025. More stable dry conditions may only arrive after this rain front moves away, likely after early August.

The German Weather Service attributes the mixed weather to the low-pressure area over Scandinavia, while no new information about the high-pressure area over Eastern Europe has been provided. The weather is expected to remain humid, with values above 30 degrees considered a hot day, but have rarely been reached so far. Currently, temperatures in Bavaria are barely above 20 degrees.
