Summer Blockbusters Arrive: Netflix Lines Up Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Releases This Season
While cinemas are bustling with excitement - thanks to the allure of bloodsuckers, feathered protagonists, and cinematic revivals - it's hard to resist the cozy convenience of streaming giants like Netflix. This summer, the streamer has unveiled an impressive lineup of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror flicks, handpicking a few gems that'll make your "watch-list" jump with excitement!
May 23 - Fear Street: Prom Queen
Remember when we thought the Fear Street trilogy was its limit? Well, save a dance for this unexpected encore, set in the hallowed halls of Shadyside High in 1988. The returning cast, including Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston, join newcomers like India Fowler and Ella Rubin for another hair-raising journey filled with mean girls, misfits, and unsolved mysteries.
June 20 - KPop Demon Hunters
Billed as an "animated action comedy," this Sony Pictures Animation project follows a trio of K-pop sensations who, despite their worldwide fame, somehow manage to moonlight as demon hunters. But things take a turn when they must protect their rabid fans, along with the rest of the world, from a sinister boy band whose cuteness hides a terrifying secret.
The directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, bring an all-star voice cast, including Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, and Liza Koshy-plus Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Byung Hun Lee.
July 2 - The Old Guard 2
We almost forgot about this sequel, but we can suppress our annoyance since the original was a lot of fun (and what's a few years between immortal warriors, right?). Directed by Victoria Mahoney, this follow-up to the 2020 hit is chock-full of a powerhouse cast (Charlize Theron, Henry Golding, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more) in another epic tale inspired by the Greg Rucka-Leandro Fernández comic books. Our immortal heroes are once again on a mission to protect the world, but this time they're faced with new obstacles like resurfaced enemies and the tantalizing secret of eternal life. Buckle up for plenty of thrilling action scenes!
July 10 - Brick
No supernatural superheroes here, just an ordinary couple ensnared in an extraordinary situation. They find themselves trapped inside their apartment building, within a mysterious wall that has appeared overnight. The only question that matters? Can they escape?
August 13 - Fixed
From the creative mind of Genndy Tartakovsky, this adult animated comedy follows a canine who decides to throw an unforgettable bash before his impending neutering surgery. The voice cast is stacked with comedy kings and queens like Adam Devine, Idris Elba, and Michelle Buteau.
TBD in Summer - Lost in Starlight
Netflix's first-ever Korean-language animated film is a romantic tale about a stranded astronaut and a musician determined to keep their love alive, despite one being on Earth and the other trapped on Mars.
