Sumar and Podemos are notified that solo electoral ventures may ensue if cooperative alliances are not considered by them.

Madrid, 25th April - United Left prepares to fly solo if left-wing pacts with Sumar or Podemos fail

The United Left (IU) is gearing up to run in upcoming elections on their own terms, if they can't strike a deal with other left-wing factions like Sumar or Podemos. This stance is clear in a draft document outlining their alliance policy, aiming to take the lead in pushing for left unity while maintaining autonomy and equality.

Despite throwing their weight behind political initiatives to the left of the PSOE, IU feels that they haven't garnered the recognition or democratic space they deserve in coalitions with Podemos and now Sumar. The document warns against last-minute coalition agreements and encourages early decision-making to pave the way for broad, representative alliances.

IU calls for a "Broad Front" of left unity, respecting other proposals while avoiding subordination. They seek agreements that learn from past mistakes, based on shared fundamental objectives, mutual respect, and democratic processes. The document emphasizes that IU will not compromise on its transformative leftist ideals for electoralist temptations.

While IU plans to pursue potential alliances with Sumar, Podemos, Greens, Compromise, Madrid More, Commons, MES, and unaffiliated groups, they won't shy away from contesting elections alone if necessary. IU notes the importance of grassroots support, municipalism, and construction from the ground up as key to their strategy.

The document underscores that a successful alliance depends on program compatibility, mutual recognition, and democratic methods. Should negotiations fail or terms not align with their objectives, IU promises to sustain their presence in the electoral landscape. As a strong organization with a presence in over 1,600 localities, IU is eager to demonstrate its autonomy and avoid getting caught in "pre-political and narcissistic debates."
