Soccer: Süle Strives for Regular BVB Spot

Niklas Süle, the international footballer, is reportedly on the cusp of securing a regular spot in Borussia Dortmund's starting eleven, according to coach Edin Terzic. Terzic praised Süle, stating, "Niklas had to be patient. But we knew that if he stayed hard-working, if he stepped on the gas, we could always rely on him. Now is the time when we need him. Now is the time when he wants to take his chance."

The upcoming Champions League preliminary round match against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday (9pm/DAZN) is set to be a significant test for Süle. With regular starter Julian Ryerson injured and Thomas Meunier not registered for the competition, as well as the potential absence of Marius Wolf, the German defender could see substantial playing time for the German side, who have already qualified for the round of 16, competing for the group victory.

The three-point lead BVB holds over the runners-up from France means they require only a draw to secure top-spot in their Champions League group. As a right-back, Süle might have to confront Paris Saint-Germain's star Kylian Mbappé the majority of the time.

Süle's recent contributions to the team are noteworthy. He came off the bench in Borussia's 3-2 draw against Leipzig last weekend, and his impressive performance earned him a goal and almost an equalizer in closing stages. "Unfortunately, Niklas was out for a long time after the international break due to his illness. However, he was able to train again last week. He put in a good performance against Leipzig," acknowledged Terzic.

Süle transferred from Bayern Munich to BVB in the summer of 2022, and speculations rose about his future with the club due to his limited playing time. Terzic showed no desire to see Süle leave the club, acknowledging the importance of players like him in defense: "We know that the season is still very long and will always bring new challenges."

Insight:

Süle's progression during the 2024/25 season deviated from the expected trajectory, with his sporadic appearances in the starting lineup. Julian Ryerson's strong performances and injuries limited Süle's game time, making it difficult for him to secure a regular position. Terzic maintained that Süle was a key figure in the team's defense, however, and relied on his strength and resilience.
