In the thrilling Test series against New Zealand, young English cricketer Jacob Bethell made a remarkable impression by scoring half-centuries in all three matches. His consistent performances have caught the attention of the England cricket team, who are currently considering whether to allow him to participate in the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe.

Bethell, who is currently engaged with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is likely to be reintroduced to the England team for the highly anticipated five-match Test series against India, scheduled to start on June 20 this summer.

The series against India and the subsequent Ashes series in Australia are considered significant for England, and the potential return of Bethell could signify a significant adjustment to the top order. However, his performances will be compared against Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope, both of whom have had inconsistent results in their careers.

Captain Ben Stokes has indicated that Bethell's return could potentially impede either opener Zak Crawley or middle-order batsman Ollie Pope. As of now, Crawley has a Test average of 30.51, while Pope stands at 34.02.

Head coach Brendon McCullum remains focused on the importance of consistent runs from all batsmen, acknowledging the depth of talent within the squad. The decision to allow Bethell to remain in the IPL is aimed at fostering his growth, as he has yet to achieve a century in professional cricket.

Stokes has stated that Bethell's performances have done him 'the world of good' and are part of England's plans moving forward. The young cricketer, at 21 years old, made a strong impression during his debut Test series in New Zealand last winter, with his opportunity arising due to Jordan Cox's injury.

Recent changes in the English team have seen established players like James Anderson and Jonny Bairstow replaced by newcomers such as Shoaib Bashir and Jamie Smith. The series against India is expected to be challenging for England due to the potential changes in the lineup.

Despite Bethell's potential, his role in the upcoming series is still uncertain. Pope has been named England's vice-captain, but his position in the lineup is not guaranteed due to his fluctuating performances. The series against Zimbabwe and the subsequent series against India will provide an opportunity for Bethell to prove his worth and secure a permanent spot in the English team.
