Sudden thunderstorm floods Peine as emergency crews scramble
A sudden and violent thunderstorm struck the district and city of Peine on Monday afternoon. The extreme weather caught residents off guard, as no prior warning had been issued by meteorologists. The storm hit with little notice, bringing torrential downpours that focused on central Peine and northern Ilsede. While neighbouring areas saw only light spring showers, these locations faced severe flooding and chaos.
Local volunteer fire brigades struggled to keep up with the surge in emergencies. Overwhelmed by calls, they required support from the Braunschweig Fire Department’s regional control center. The department handled more than 100 extra emergency callouts as a result of the storm.
The storm’s intensity remained confined to a small area, leaving surrounding regions largely unaffected. Emergency services worked through the afternoon to manage the aftermath, with coordination efforts led by the Braunschweig control center.
