Sudden Suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Leaves His Staff and On-the-way Celebrity Guests in Surprise

In a surprising turn of events, ABC News has suspended the long-running late-night talk show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' indefinitely. The decision comes after FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened action against Disney and ABC News over comments made by Jimmy Kimmel on his latest news show. The show, which has been on the air for over two decades, is helmed by Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney, who serves as the head writer and executive producer. Kimmel's contract with ABC News expires in May 2026. The controversy stems from comments made by Kimmel, with Trump also criticizing the show's ratings as 'horrible'. Trump celebrated the suspension of the show on his Truth Social platform, while numerous Hollywood publicists, producers, and media executives expressed their astonishment over the decision. Gina Blackwell, a media analyst, questioned the suspension, stating it infringes on freedom of speech. Michael Blackwell, another media figure, criticized ABC News' decision, stating it's an example of 'getting stuck on stupid'. Some audience members had been waiting in line for over an hour when they were told the taping had been cancelled. Staffers inside ABC News were reportedly stunned by the suspension. ABC News did not respond to CNN's request for comment regarding whether Kimmel and his show team will continue to be paid during the suspension. Some entertainment industry figures question whether the show will return to air, given the current political climate and Kimmel's vocal criticism of President Trump. In 2022, Kimmel publicly considered ending his late-night show and joked about 'quiet quitting' for three years. This recent development, however, seems to suggest a more permanent hiatus for the popular talk show. As the situation unfolds, fans of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and media enthusiasts alike await updates on the show's potential return and the future of late-night television. CNN's Matt Friedman contributed to this story.
