Hikers are urged to heed the weather prediction before hitting the trails, following a thrilling mountain rescue mission that successfully saved three young adventurers.
"Nature doesn't care about your plans. The weather can flip in a heartbeat, and when it does, it might mean the difference between life and death," posts Skamania County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team on their social media page.
"Always check the forecast, pack essential survival equipment, and never underestimate mother nature."
Stuck on Table Mountain in Skamania County, Washington, these three lads got stranded when the climate took a sudden and vicious turn, leaving numerous trails destroyed in its wake.
Caught at over 3,000ft / 914m and facing incessant rain and gusts of up to 60mph, the trio struggled till a third rescue team arrived, battling slippery terrains for three and a half hours. Luckily, these hikers exhibited symptoms of hypothermia, but rescuers couldn't descend with them as the weather continued to deteriorate, leaving them all trapped.
Two helicopters also made the attempt but were forced back due to the deteriorating weather. Harnessing the persistence of over 50 rescuers from nine different teams, they braved the night on foot carrying medical supplies, dry clothes, food, water, and made their way up to reach the hikers. Miraculously, they managed to bring the hikers, along with the safety team, down to safety. One of the hikers was airlifted to the hospital, but all three performed admirably.
Skamania County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team leader, Serge Newberry, hailed the mission as nothing short of a miracle. "Three miracles, if you will. A series of them, truthfully," he told KGW8. He further added, "It's a joyful sight to see these young hikers reunited with their family members. It's truly moving."
