Sudden assaults force over 10,000 residents to flee in southwestern Sudan
Run-down Rampage:
Despicable acts, taking place over the weekend and today, have stomped their ugly footprints on the villages of Daruta, Faoum, Yangi, and Haniq, neighboring Nahud and Al Jaoi, which have been under tight control by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for weeks. The aftermath has been a chilling toll of "dozens of casualties, injuries, and kidnappings, in addition to widespread looting of goods and shops," as per a statement released on the Emergency Chamber of the State's Facebook page.
According to this chamber, the rebels were also responsible for the "destruction of water sources," resulting in the agonizing deaths of hundreds of livestock due to thirst.
In a brutal twist, "the lack of access to water and the rampant violence forced thousands of residents to abandon their homes, transforming the temporary capital, Nahud, into a 'deserted town' with corpses lining the streets, as the RSF prevented families from giving their loved ones a proper burial," the document states further.
The war in Sudan has left a trail of destruction, leading to an estimated 100,000 deaths, displacing around 13 million people, and dividing the country into zones controlled by the army in the north, east, and center, the paramilitaries in the vast western region of Darfur, and large parts of the south that remain in dispute.
The United Nations has increased the number of people displaced by the civil war in Sudan to four million this week, considering it a heart-wrenching milestone in the world's worst displacement crisis.
Fueling this turmoil is a power struggle that has plagued the third largest country in Africa since April 2023, between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, head of the army and Sudan's ruler since a coup d'état in 2021, and his former right-hand man, Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, commander of the RSF.
