Sudan's Army Accused of Using Chemical Weapons in 2024 Conflict

Published: May 26, 2025 - 09:14 GMT

Evidence has emerged suggesting that the Sudanese Army, under the leadership of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, employed chemical weapons during clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in 2024. The United States announced last week its intention to impose sanctions on Sudan, citing the use of prohibited substances as grounds.

According to the U.S. State Department, the Trump administration will restrict U.S. exports to Sudan and limit Sudan's access to U.S. government lines of credit due to the alleged use of chemical weapons. The measures are set to take effect around June 6, with the State Department urging the government of Sudan to cease the use of such weapons and comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Reports of chemical weapons use during the ongoing conflict with the RSF have been denied by the Sudanese military. However, symptoms consistent with chemical weapons exposure, such as internal burns, lung corrosion, and slow death due to asphyxiation, have reportedly been observed in affected areas.

Investigations have pointed to chemical agents being used in various cities, including Mellit, El Koma, and Khartoum, with soil and water tests, burnt civilian remains, and testimony from investigative teams providing supporting evidence.

The Sudanese government, including General al-Burhan, has repeatedly rejected the U.S. accusations as politically motivated. In response, a national committee was established on May 29, 2025, to investigate the allegations. The committee, consisting of representatives from the foreign and defense ministries, as well as the General Intelligence Service, is expected to submit its report immediately.

The RSF has welcomed the upcoming U.S. sanctions, viewing them as a means of exposing what they term "heinous crimes" against the Sudanese people. In contrast, the Sudanese government has accused the U.S. of double standards, claiming that American-made weapons have been found in the hands of the RSF and questioning the motives behind the allegations.
