Sudanese conflict threatens to escalate in Central African Republic, UN alerts
In the Heart of Chaos:
The homeland of peace could be a distant dream for the Central African Republic (CAR) as tensions escalate, with the ongoing conflict in Sudan threatening its fragile stability.
Last week, an attack by an armed group on a UN patrol in CAR claimed the life of a brave Zambian peacekeeper, highlighting the volatile situation. The CAR, one of the world's poorest countries, shares a border with Sudan, which has been engulfed in a devastating conflict since April 2023.
During a Security Council meeting on Thursday, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, pointed out the worrying escalation of violence near the CAR's borders, particularly from Sudanese militants. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres's office, in a recent report, also echoed these concerns.
Lacroix warned of the fragile security situation in CAR's border areas, noting that instability is characterized by the spillover of Sudanese conflict, including incursions by armed groups. The fear is not unfounded, as the Sudanese armed forces, such as the infamous Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, have been linked to attacks on UN peacekeepers in CAR, including a fatal one near the CAR-Sudan border.
The RSF militia, often categorized as a terrorist group, has recruited locals, compromising the sovereignty of CAR. This influx of heavily armed fighters aggravates the already precarious situation, straining resources and escalating violence.
To make matters worse, the influx of Sudanese refugees into CAR has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. As of June 1, an estimated 36,642 Sudanese refugees reside in CAR, putting additional strain on already scarce resources.
CAR's UN ambassador, Marius Aristide Hoja Nzessioue, voices concern, stating, "The Sudanese conflict is a real threat. Armed groups are crossing our borders, recruiting young people and compromising our sovereignty."
Lacroix emphasized the critical juncture CAR finds itself in, stressing the importance of international support for the country's progress towards upcoming elections. However, he also cautioned that these efforts must be sustained for CAR to become a beacon of peace - a success story not just for Central Africans but for peacekeeping and the UN Security Council as well.
