Successfully thwarted drone incursion over Voronezh.
In a series of escalating incidents, Russian regions have been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks, with the latest attack on Belgorod resulting in casualties. On the night of July 16, 11 Russian regions, including Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, and Moscow, were subjected to a coordinated drone strike operation.
According to preliminary reports, 122 drones were intercepted by Russian air defenses, with the highest numbers shot down over Bryansk (43) and Kursk (38) regions. The specific type of drones involved in these attacks was not specified.
The incident on July 16 marked a large drone strike operation, following a trend of intensifying drone and missile attacks related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. In June 2025, a sharp surge in long-range missile and drone strikes across the wider war zone led to record civilian casualties on the Ukrainian side, highlighting an escalation in drone warfare and air offensives by both sides.
In the city of Belgorod, a drone dropped explosives on a private home, resulting in the unfortunate death of a woman. In Voronezh, residential buildings were hit, injuring three children. Moscow air defenses downed three drones aimed at the capital, but no reported injuries were recorded.
Airports have also been affected, with Vnukovo Airport in Moscow and Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg temporarily restricting flights due to drone threats.
Local authorities are providing updates and coordinating responses to incidents involving residential damage and civilian casualties. Russian air defense forces remain active and have successfully intercepted a majority of the incoming drones, mitigating further damage. Emergency services have been promptly engaged, treating injured civilians on-site or in hospitals.
The situation underscores the ongoing need for robust air defenses and civil protection protocols in affected Russian regions to reduce harm to civilians. Residents are urged to follow safety measures, such as moving to a windowless building in case of a drone flyover or sounds of air defense systems.
