Successfully expediting the Zoji La Pass opening in a remarkable 73 days, affecting significant traffic flow improvements.

After a 73-day closure due to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and slippery road conditions, the strategic Zoji La Pass in the Himalayas reopened on March 19, 2022. This crucial gateway between Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir is typically inaccessible during the winter season, from December to March.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for maintaining strategic connectivity and contributing to nation-building, undertook snow clearance operations from both sides of the pass since February 15, 2022. The successful efforts led to the initial establishment of connectivity on March 4, 2022, and the full reopening of the pass on March 19, 2022.

The Director General Border Roads (DGBR), Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, was present during the reopening, praising the efforts of Project Beacon and Vijayak. He stated that the early opening of the pass would bolster the country's defense preparedness and facilitate the movement of essential commodities to the people of Ladakh.

The DGBR also mentioned that the opening of the pass would assist BRO in stocking material required for constructing important infrastructure projects in Ladakh, such as the Zojila Tunnel, which aims to provide all-weather connectivity throughout the year.

The reopening of the Zoji La pass is a significant development for the people of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, as it provides a crucial route for essential supplies. It is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, allowing for the movement of goods and people more freely.

Located at an altitude of 11,650 feet on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh national highway, Zoji La is a strategic pass that links Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, serving as the key to operational preparedness of the Armed Forces. The DGBR reiterated BRO's commitment to be at the forefront in nation-building and maintaining strategic connectivity in challenging conditions.

The reopening of the Zoji La pass marks a significant improvement in the region's infrastructure, facilitating easier access and communication. It is the first time BRO has kept the pass open till January 5, 2022, through relentless snow clearance operations amidst harsh weather conditions.
