Success in Saarbrücken: Braunschweig struggles to maintain second-tier status
Eintracht Braunschweig Takes Sizable Step Towards 2. Bundesliga Survival
Saarbrücken (dpa) - Eintracht Braunschweig has made a significant stride towards staying in the 2. Bundesliga, potentially dealing a considerable blow to 1. FC Saarbrücken's aspirations of a return to professional football after 19 years. On Monday, Braunschweig secured a 2-0 victory in the relegation playoff first leg against third-placed 3rd league team Saarbrücken, leaving the Lower Saxony team poised to secure their league place in the upcoming home match on Tuesday at 8:30 PM.
Approximately 15,000 spectators witnessed the action at the sold-out Ludwigsparkstadion, where Lino Tempelmann (49th minute) and Marvin Rittmüller (61st minute) scored for the visiting team. Braunschweig demonstrated a more mature and tactically astute approach than Saarbrücken throughout the game.
The hosts, who reached the cup semi-finals in the previous season, struggled to generate any convincing pressure against Braunschweig. Kai Brünker's shot in the 16th minute was the only real threat to the visiting team in the first half.
Braunschweig came out strong after the break, clinically finishing their opportunities. Tempelmann scored the first goal from around 20 meters after a quick counterattack, while Rittmüller put the second in with a precise low shot into the corner twelve minutes later.
Saarbrücken appeared caught off guard and nearly conceded a third goal shortly after, thanks to a brilliant save by Philipp Menzel against a header from Ermin Bicakcic. The hosts failed to mount a comeback in the closing stages, leaving Braunschweig with a comfortable lead heading into the second leg.
Coaching Change Bolsters Braunschweig's Performance
After the short-term coaching change earlier in the week, with Marc Pfitzner replacing the dismissed Daniel Scherning, Braunschweig appeared much more stable in both their recent losses against Nuremberg (1:4) and Elversberg (0:3) in the 2nd league sprint.
Relegation Playoff Results and Upcoming Match
The relegation playoff first leg was played on May 23, 2025, with the second leg scheduled for May 27, 2025, at the Eintracht-Stadion. Given their strong performance, Braunschweig will be favored to remain in the 2. Bundesliga, while Saarbrücken must overturn the two-goal deficit to advance in the second leg and avoid relegation to the lower division.
