Narrowly escaping a week-long stormy predicament, the Berlin S-Bahn network has yet again been halted by another tempest. The storm, this time referred to as "Ziros," battered the city on Monday, resulting in a second shutdown of the train service within a week.
The company announced the suspension of all S-Bahn lines in the evening on X, calling out storm-related disruptions as the culprit behind the shutdown. The catastrophic downpour resulted in at least 150 trains being grounded, leaving passengers stranded for over two hours in some instances. Tragically, fallen trees caused the greatest havoc by encroaching on the tracks.
The shutdown set in as early as 6:15 PM, a spokesperson for the company informed. In response, trains were ordered to halt operations and wait out the storm at the nearest station. Despite the chaos, teams worked round-the-clock to clear the tracks as swiftly as possible, with announcements regarding resumption of operations to follow.
On this note, passengers were urged to refer to the company's website for updated information, as emergency services struggled to attend to hundreds of storm-related incidents sprawled across Berlin and Brandenburg. The storm unleashed hurricane-strength winds with speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour.
Though no recent reports indicate the S-Bahn network still being under lockdown, the temporary shutdown is thought to have lasted for the storm's immediate period and the ensuing day, following which service started to be gradually restored by Tuesday morning. Although some lines such as the Ringbahn and S47 remained unaffected, numerous others experienced delays and cancellations.
In essence, the initial shutdown was limited to the immediate aftermath of the storm, with partial resumption of service commencing by Tuesday. Given the storm's extensive chaos, it's highly likely that service has progressively resumed or is close to restoration by now, with minor delays or restrictions persisting due to cleanup and infrastructure checks.
