Last year, a flood came real close to damaging the power station in Dellmensingen, managing to avoid calamity by a hair's breadth. Today, the water has receded, but the lessons learnt from the flood lingers on.

Nearly 10,000 households stood the risk of losing power. Thanks to the bravery of firefighters and volunteers, the gravest impact of the flood at the Erbach-Dellmensingen power station was averted. A year later, operators, firefighters, and the municipal authorities have learned from this harrowing ordeal.

A Year Has Passed Since the Flood

Exactly a year has gone by since the flood. It's raining lightly on this Tuesday at the Erbach-Dellmensingen power station. Almost like last year. Only the end of the rain brought relief to the emergency services back then. They had heaped up thousands of sandbags on the road to a dam. Behind it, the fields were underwater.

Fire Department: Sandbags and logistical Challenges During the Flood

District Fire Chief Ralf Ziegler still recalls last year vividly. "That was a mammoth logistical challenge, bringing sandbags here after we already had a massive deployment in Illerkirchberg."

The Alb-Donau district has learned from this, says Ziegler. "That we need to actively maintain a sandbag management system." This also includes the logistical task of distributing them correctly. "It's of no use if you have a truck on site with 5,000 sandbags, but no forklift to unload them. That was actually the main problem."

Netze BW: Flood Protection Not Just in Erbach-Dellmensingen

The operator of the power station, Netze BW, has made changes based on the flood. First, Andreas Herre, then in charge of the power station, repaired the damage. "Then we raised the light shafts on the facades and installed flood barriers."

Later, they examined the other infrastructure sites of Netze BW, where electricity and gas flow, for flood risk, says Herre. "We have derived corresponding measures from this."

Municipality of Erbach: Not the First Flood

For the municipality of Erbach, last year's flood was not the first. Mayor Achim Gaus has experienced several himself. "Each flood has its own quirks and challenges." Last year, for instance, there were issues with a rainwater retention canal between Dellmensingen and the Erbach wastewater treatment plant.

The issue has since been addressed, says Gaus. Furthermore, they plan to check how water inflow can be contained in the future through ditches along the power station.

In times of floods, it is essential to have robust flood prevention measures in place. Typical measures include building flood protection infrastructure, implementing efficient stormwater drainage systems, establishing early warning systems, educating the public on flood risks, maintaining existing flood protection infrastructure, regulating development in flood-prone areas, and collaborating with local authorities, emergency services, and the public to develop comprehensive plans for flood prevention and response. It may be beneficial to consult local government resources or contact local authorities directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

  1. In the light of last year's flood, the importance of climate-change research and environmental-science in weather forecasting has become more evident, as it could potentially help in predicting and preparing for such disasters.
  2. As we reflect on the flood incident at the Erbach-Dellmensingen power station, it's clear that weather-forecasting plays a crucial role in implementing effective flood prevention measures, allowing emergency services to be prepared and take necessary actions.
  3. The flood incident at Erbach-Dellmensingen has sparked renewed interest in the study of climate-change and environmental-science, as understanding these factors could provide valuable insights for future weather-forecasting and thus, enhance flood prevention strategies.
