Stuttgart State Theatre Sets New Audience Records

In the heart of Germany, the Stuttgart State Theaters continue to captivate audiences with their compelling performances, setting new records in attendance and revenue. According to General Intendant Marc-Oliver Hendriks, these performances offer a constant in the fast-paced, digital world, providing a haven for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The success of these theaters can be measured by their impressive attendance and revenue figures. The current season has seen a significant increase, with the revenue from ticket sales reaching 18.2 million euros, a notable jump from the 16.7 million euros in the previous year and 16.3 million euros in the 2022/2023 season. The total number of visitors is expected to exceed 447,000 by the end of the season, breaking previous records. As of 30th June, a total of 397,673 visitors have been counted, with the ballet in Stuttgart almost always performing to sold-out houses.

The overall attendance rate for all departments of the Stuttgart State Theaters currently stands at 89%. This high rate, similar to that seen at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (98.07% for drama, opera, and ballet performances), indicates strong audience engagement and effective programming.

Looking ahead, the Stuttgart State Theaters have plans for renovation and expansion. The building from 1911 will undergo a comprehensive renovation over a period of ten years, starting after 2033. The Littmann Building, needing renovation, will have to be used at least until 2033, four years longer than previously thought.

The administrative council of the State Theaters will meet again on Wednesday, 9th July, to discuss the current plan. While specific details about the renovation strategies, alternative performance venues, or operational status were not provided, it is clear that the Stuttgart State Theaters are committed to enhancing audience experience, improving facilities, and attracting new audiences.

Critics have warned of a "bottomless pit" and called for alternatives to the current plan. However, Hendriks remains optimistic, expecting a record attendance of over 447,000 by the end of the season. The establishment of alternative venues, similar to the Croatian National Theatre's new stage (CNT 2), can help reach broader audiences and provide diverse programming options.

The Stuttgart State Theaters continue to generate significant revenue from ticket sales and events, contributing to the city's economy. For example, African Parks reported US$14.3 million in gross revenue from 230,000 visitors in 2024. As the Stuttgart State Theaters continue to thrive, they serve as a testament to the enduring power of live performance and the role it plays in bringing people together.

The Stuttgart State Theaters' ongoing success can be attributed to their high attendance rates for live performances, with the current season expected to surpass 447,000 visitors, breaking records. To further improve audience experience, the theaters plan to renovate and expand, aiming to attract new audiences and provide diverse entertainment options.
