Stuttgart secures fourth German Cup victory in its chronicles
In the initial half-hour of the high-stakes match, VfB Stuttgart established a significant lead, courtesy of goals from Nick Woltemade, Deniz Undav, and Millot. Woltemade and Undav, key members of the Bundesliga outfit, have made impressive contributions this season, with Woltemade scoring 12 goals across league and cup competitions [1][3][4].
The scoreline shifted at the 66th minute when Millot found the back of the net once more. Despite their efforts, the third division champions, aiming for an 'unusual double,' faced an uphill battle. Kania scored for the underdogs at the 82nd minute, followed by a late own goal by Vagnoman at 85. While this pinched some hope and offered some consolation, Stuttgart held on to their lead.
The win secures Stuttgart's qualification for the Europa League, as they finished ninth in the German championship [2]. This victory also marks a new trophy for the club since their last win in 1996/97, and the first title since their triumph in the second tier in 2017 [2]. Fernando Meira held the captain's armband during their last German championship title in 2006/07.
The trophy-winning Stuttgart will square off against German champions Bayern Munich in the Supercup on August 16 [2].
Furthermore, Bayern Munich has shown interest in settling for Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes, should they fail to acquire young prodigy Jamal Musiala from their own ranks [5].
