Stuttgart Honors Flood Heroes with Civil Protection Medal for 2024 Crisis Response

Emergency responders in Stuttgart have received the Baden-Württemberg Civil Protection Medal of Honor for their work during the 2024 floods. The severe storms in late May and early June caused widespread damage across southern Germany, including Stuttgart and nearby districts. The award highlights the critical efforts of those who managed the crisis.

The floods struck after heavy rainfall overwhelmed rivers and drainage systems. Volunteer and professional fire crews, alongside agencies like the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG), worked around the clock to protect residents and infrastructure.

Teams filled thousands of sandbags to reinforce defences and used high-capacity pumps to drain flooded areas. Swiftwater rescue units and boats were deployed to evacuate stranded people. The operation also involved specialised equipment, such as the Hytrans Fire System, and a large number of personnel.

Stuttgart’s emergency chaplaincy service extended support to relief efforts in the Rems-Murr district. The medal recognised individuals who contributed at least 72 hours of service during the crisis. Dr. Clemens Maier, Stuttgart’s mayor for public order, safety, and sports, and Dr. Georg Belge, the city’s fire chief, commended the responders’ relentless dedication.

Representatives from the fire department, DLRG, and THW accepted the award on behalf of all involved. The names of the emergency team leaders have not been made public.

The Civil Protection Medal of Honor acknowledges the collective effort of Stuttgart’s emergency services. Their work included flood defences, rescues, and logistical support during one of the region’s most challenging disasters. The recognition also underscores the importance of coordination between volunteer and professional responders in crisis management.
