In an unexpected turn of events, Canadian comedian Mike Ward has expressed his disbelief over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". The news was first reported by The Canadian Press and later confirmed by files from The Associated Press.

Ward, known for his ardent advocacy for free speech, took to X to voice his opinion, stating that Kimmel has "always defended free speech". The suspension, reportedly due to political reasons, has sparked controversy, with Ward comparing the U.S. to a "pale copy of a once great nation".

The suspension follows Kimmel's comments about the assassination of Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk on his Monday and Tuesday night shows. Kimmel's remarks suggested that the suspected killer was an adherent of U.S. President Donald Trump's political movement.

Mike Ward's own history with controversial comments is well-documented. He was involved in a years-long court fight after mocking a disabled Quebec singer in a routine. The Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that Ward's disparaging comments did not amount to discrimination under Quebec's rights charter.

The responsibility for the suspension of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" is attributed primarily to Brendan Carr, the Trump-appointed head of the US media regulator FCC. Carr publicly pressured local stations to drop the show and threatened consequences, causing broadcaster ABC to suspend the show under political and regulatory pressure connected to former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Ward has blamed the FCC for Kimmel's suspension, viewing it as a "100 per cent political" move. He believes that this is yet another instance of free speech being stifled in the name of politics.

As the situation unfolds, fans and critics alike are watching closely to see how this will impact the future of late-night television and the boundaries of free speech in the U.S.
